How to Play
Everything you need to know to master the daily football guessing game.
What Is Daily Play?
Daily Play is a free daily football trivia game that challenges your knowledge of professional footballers. Each day a new mystery player is revealed through their career history — clubs, seasons, country flags, and more — and your job is to figure out who they are.
You have a limited number of attempts to guess the player. Each wrong answer unlocks a new hint that helps you narrow down the answer. The faster you guess and the fewer attempts you use, the higher your score.
Reading the Career Grid
The career grid is your main source of clues. It displays the mystery player's professional career as a series of entries, each containing:
- Club name — the team the player played for during that period.
- Date range — the years or seasons they were at that club.
- Country flag — the country where the club is based, giving you a geographic clue.
- League context — some entries include additional details about the competition level.
Read the grid carefully. A player who moved from a South American club to a top European league in a specific year can reveal a lot. Pay attention to the sequence of transfers, the countries involved, and how long the player stayed at each club.
The Hint System
You start with only the career grid visible. Each time you submit a wrong guess, a new hint is unlocked to help you get closer to the answer:
- First wrong guess — the player's position is revealed (e.g. Forward, Midfielder, Defender, Goalkeeper).
- Second wrong guess — the player's nationality is revealed, narrowing down the possibilities significantly.
- Additional hints may include fun facts or other career details depending on the riddle configuration.
Use each hint strategically. If you already suspect a player but are not sure, wait to see if the next hint confirms your theory before using another attempt.
Scoring System
Your score is calculated based on several factors that reward both speed and accuracy:
- Base score — every correct answer starts with 1,000 base points.
- Time penalty — you lose 10 points for every second you take. Fast answers are rewarded.
- Attempt penalty — each additional attempt beyond the first costs you 100 points.
- Accuracy bonus — guessing on your first try earns 200 extra points; second try earns 100 extra.
- Speed bonus — answering in under 30 seconds earns a significant bonus multiplier.
Difficulty also affects your score. Harder players have a higher multiplier (up to 1.6x for expert-level players), so guessing a lesser-known footballer correctly earns you more points than an easy one. Your active streak also multiplies your score, up to a maximum of 3x.
Score Grades
After each game your score is converted into a letter grade so you can see how well you performed at a glance:
- S (2,000+ points) — Master level. Near-perfect speed and accuracy on a tough player.
- A (1,500+ points) — Excellent. You clearly know your football.
- B (1,000+ points) — Very good. A solid performance with room to improve.
- C (500+ points) — Good. You got it right, but could be faster or use fewer attempts.
- D (200+ points) — Average. You found the answer, but it took a while.
Streaks
A streak tracks how many consecutive days you answer the daily challenge correctly. Every day you get the daily riddle right, your streak increases by one. Miss a day or get the answer wrong, and your streak resets to zero.
Streaks are more than bragging rights — they directly boost your score. Your streak acts as a multiplier: a 5-day streak gives you 1.5x points, a 10-day streak gives you 2x, and the maximum multiplier is 3x at 20+ days. Building a long streak is the fastest way to climb the leaderboard. Note that only the Daily mode counts toward your streak — Penalty mode games do not affect it.
Achievements
As you play, you unlock achievements that celebrate milestones and exceptional performances. There are several categories:
- Speed achievements — awarded for answering in under 10, 20, or 30 seconds (Lightning Fast, Speed Demon, Quick Thinker).
- Accuracy achievements — awarded for guessing on your first or second try (First Try, Efficient, Perfect Game).
- Score achievements — awarded for reaching score thresholds of 1,000, 1,500, or 2,000+ points (Good Score, Excellent Score, Score Master).
- Streak achievements — awarded for maintaining winning streaks of 3, 5, or 10+ days (On Fire, Hot Streak, Streak Master).
Game Modes
Daily Play offers two ways to play, each designed for a different experience:
- Daily Challenge — a new mystery player goes live every day at midnight (UTC). This is the main mode: it affects your streak, counts toward the leaderboard, and is shared by all players worldwide. Everyone gets the same riddle each day.
- Penalty Mode — practice anytime with a randomly selected riddle. This mode has no impact on your streak or leaderboard ranking. It is perfect for warming up, practising, or simply playing more when you have already completed the daily challenge.
Your Account and the Leaderboard
You can play Daily Play without creating an account — the game works right away in your browser. However, if you want to save your scores, track your statistics over time, and appear on the global leaderboard, you can register with your email address. Registration is free and takes just a few seconds.
After finishing a game, you will see a prompt to save your points. Tap the button, enter your name and email, and your scores will be linked to your account from that point on. You can view your stats — total score, best score, average score, and current streak — at any time from the account panel in the top navigation bar.
Difficulty Levels
Each player is assigned a difficulty rating based on how well-known they are and how distinctive their career path is. The difficulty levels are:
- Easy (0.8x multiplier) — well-known players with short, distinctive careers. Most fans will recognise them quickly.
- Medium (1.0x multiplier) — moderately well-known players. You need decent football knowledge to identify them.
- Hard (1.3x multiplier) — less famous players or those with long, complex careers across many clubs.
- Expert (1.6x multiplier) — obscure players with extensive careers spanning many countries. Only true football encyclopaedias will get these right.
Tips and Strategies
- Start with the country flags — they immediately narrow down the leagues and regions the player has been active in.
- Pay attention to transfer timing — a move from Argentina to Europe in 2009 combined with specific clubs can often identify a player uniquely.
- Do not waste attempts on wild guesses. Study the grid first and use the hints that unlock after wrong answers to refine your thinking.
- Play every day to build your streak multiplier. Even a modest 5-day streak gives you 50% more points on every correct answer.
- Check the player profiles in our Players section to familiarise yourself with the kind of careers featured in the game.
