Every defender in Europe knew what Arjen Robben was going to do, and for the better part of two decades almost none of them could stop it. The move was the cut inside from the right flank onto his left foot, followed by a curling shot towards the far corner, and it became one of the most recognisable signatures in football. Born in Bedum, in the province of Groningen, in January 1984, he began his career at FC Groningen in 2000, and it is fitting that the same club was his last.

Groningen gave him his debut in the Eredivisie as a teenager, and by 2002 PSV Eindhoven had signed him. In Eindhoven he became one of the brightest young attackers in the Netherlands, fast, direct and already fond of running at full-backs until they made a mistake. His two seasons there were enough to attract the attention of the Premier League.

Chelsea signed him in 2004, and from then until 2007 he was part of the side that won back-to-back league titles in London, the first in fifty years for the club. Injuries, a recurring theme throughout his career, limited his appearances, but when fit he was one of the most dangerous wide players in England. In 2007 he moved to Real Madrid, where two seasons in La Liga brought a league title but also the feeling that he had not been fully embraced.

The decisive move came in 2009, when Bayern Munich signed him. The decade that followed, through to 2019, made him a legend. Alongside the French winger on the opposite flank he formed one of the most celebrated wing partnerships of the era, and Bayern dominated the Bundesliga year after year. The defining night came at Wembley in May 2013, when he scored the late winning goal in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, a release after painful defeats in previous finals.

With the Netherlands he was central to the runs to the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa and the 2014 semi-final in Brazil, where his acceleration on the counter-attack was one of the defining images of the tournament.

He left Bayern in 2019 and announced his retirement, only to return a year later for one more season, from 2020 to 2021, at Groningen, the club where it had all started. Persistent physical problems limited that comeback, but the symbolic weight of it mattered: the career ended where it began, in the north of the Netherlands.
