Dominik Szoboszlai
About Dominik Szoboszlai
Few modern careers have been planned as deliberately as Dominik Szoboszlai's. Born in October 2000 in Székesfehérvár, Hungary, he left home as a teenager to join the Red Bull system in Austria, and each rung of that ladder is easy to trace: FC Liefering from 2017, Red Bull Salzburg from 2018, RB Leipzig in Germany from 2021, and Liverpool in England since 2023. Each step was bigger than the last, and none of them was a detour.
Liefering, Salzburg's feeder side in Austria's second division, is where the club places its most promising youngsters to play men's football early. That is how the Austrian 2. Liga became part of his career. Szoboszlai needed only one season there before moving up to Salzburg, where he matured into a midfielder with a long stride, an unusually clean strike from distance and a willingness to cover enormous amounts of ground. Salzburg played a high-pressing, vertical style, and he fitted it perfectly.
The jump to Leipzig, the German flagship of the same group, came in early 2021. In the Bundesliga he became known for his set pieces and his long-range shooting, and for a habit of turning up in different midfield roles depending on what the team needed. Two years later Liverpool signed him, a move that took him out of the Red Bull family for the first time since he was a teenager.
At Anfield the expectation was that he would bring energy and goals from midfield, and he has done both, while also learning to adapt to positions further back and even on the right side when injuries demanded it. He was part of the squad that won the Premier League in the 2024-25 season, a first league title for him in one of the major European competitions.
For Hungary he means even more. He is the captain of the national team, and in November 2020 his late strike against Iceland sent Hungary to the delayed European Championship, a moment that made him a national hero before he had turned twenty-one. The cruel twist was that an injury then kept him out of that very tournament, so the player who had taken Hungary there could only watch. Since then he has carried much of the team's creative burden at major tournaments.
His path is unusual for a Hungarian player of recent generations, most of whom stayed home or moved to smaller leagues. Szoboszlai went through the Austrian lower divisions, the Austrian top flight, the Bundesliga and the Premier League in under a decade. If you see a Hungarian midfielder whose path runs Liefering, Salzburg, Leipzig, it is hard to think of anyone else.
