Frenkie de Jong left Willem II almost before anyone in Tilburg had a chance to get used to him. The club from the south of the Netherlands gave him his first senior minutes in 2015, and by 2016 he had been taken north to Amsterdam, where Ajax planned a slower education. Born in May 1997, he was still a teenager, a tall and slightly built midfielder whose most striking habit was to carry the ball out of defence himself instead of passing it on to someone better placed.

He has played in three competitions, and the first of them explains a lot. Before he became a fixture in the Ajax first team, he spent time with Jong Ajax in the Eerste Divisie, the Dutch second tier, where the reserve side of a big club plays against grown men from smaller towns. That apprenticeship was about patience: learning when to dribble through a press and when to release, playing in more than one role, sometimes even dropping into the back line.

By the 2018-19 season the patience had paid off spectacularly. De Jong was the heartbeat of the young Ajax side that thrilled Europe on its run to the Champions League semi-finals, knocking out heavyweights along the way. Watching him then, the defining image was of a midfielder gliding past the first wave of pressure with his head up, turning a defensive situation into an attack in three or four strides. It was an old Ajax idea, the footballer who can do everything with the ball, performed by someone who looked entirely modern.

Barcelona had already agreed his signing before that run ended, and in 2019 he moved to Spain. The move made sense on paper. Barcelona's own football grew out of the Dutch school, and a progressive midfielder from Ajax seemed a natural fit at Camp Nou. Reality was more complicated. The club went through coaching changes, money problems and constant debate about how to use him, and for spells he was asked to play deeper or more conservatively than in Amsterdam. Transfer speculation followed him for a long period, yet he has stayed put, still a Barcelona player with no departure in sight.

That continuity is the most telling part of his La Liga years. Rather than chasing a fresh start, he remained and adapted, becoming one of the more experienced figures in a dressing room that filled up with academy teenagers. His role in Catalonia has been less about spectacular runs than about control, keeping the team's possession calm under pressure.

Internationally he has been a regular in the Netherlands midfield since his Ajax breakthrough. The career itself is short to list but rich in contrast: Willem II for a first look, Ajax for the education and the European explosion, then a long, sometimes turbulent and still ongoing stay at Barcelona.
