Gerard Piqué had to leave Barcelona to become a Barcelona player. Born in the city in February 1987, he came through the club's youth system, but as a teenager in 2004 he moved to Manchester United, where he stayed until 2008. England was a demanding school for a tall, ball-playing centre-back: the Premier League was physical, the competition for places at Old Trafford was fierce, and first-team chances were limited.

To get real minutes he went out on loan, spending a season at Real Zaragoza in 2006 and 2007. It was his first sustained taste of La Liga as a starter, and it showed that he could cope with week-in, week-out top-flight football in Spain. He returned to Manchester afterwards, but his future was already pointing home.

In 2008 Barcelona brought him back, and the timing turned out to be historic. He arrived just as a new era began at Camp Nou, and within his first season the club won an unprecedented treble. From there Piqué became a fixture at the heart of the defence for fourteen years, the tall centre-back who started attacks from the back with a calmness that suited the club's possession game. He was rarely the fastest defender on the pitch, but his reading of the game and his comfort on the ball made up for it, and he chipped in with headed goals from set pieces.

His Barcelona years coincided with the most successful period in the club's history. League titles and Champions League trophies arrived repeatedly, and he formed defensive partnerships that became part of the identity of that team. Off the pitch he was outspoken and visible, never shy about the Real Madrid rivalry or about his opinions, and that personality made him one of the most recognisable figures of Spanish football.

With Spain he was part of the generation that dominated international football, winning the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012 alongside the defensive partner he faced every week from the other side of El Clásico. That partnership with a Madrid captain at the centre of Spain's back line is one of the curious details of his era.

La Liga was the only league he played in as a regular, which is a neat summary of how his career is remembered even though it began in Manchester. He retired in 2022, still a Barcelona player, closing the circle that had opened when he left the city as a teenager. A centre-back raised at La Masia, sharpened in England, tested in Zaragoza and then rooted at Camp Nou for well over a decade.
