Hakan Çalhanoğlu is one of the very few players to have crossed Milan's great divide directly, swapping the red and black of AC Milan for the blue and black of Inter in 2021. That move, made on a free transfer, defines how many Italian fans think of him, but his career began with a long German apprenticeship long before anyone in Lombardy knew his name.

Born in February 1994 in Mannheim to a Turkish family, he holds both German and Turkish nationality and chose to represent Turkey at international level. His professional story begins at Karlsruher SC, where he played from 2011 to 2013. He played in both the 3. Liga and the 2. Bundesliga there, a reminder that he started in the lower tiers of German football, helping Karlsruhe through that period as a creative young midfielder with an eye for spectacular strikes.

Hamburger SV signed him in 2013, giving him his first season in the Bundesliga. It was a difficult time for the Hamburg club, but the young midfielder stood out, above all for his free kicks. Long-range dead-ball goals became his trademark, struck with a dipping, swerving technique that goalkeepers found hard to read.

In 2014 he moved to Bayer Leverkusen, staying three seasons and playing regularly in the Champions League. At Leverkusen he matured into a complete attacking midfielder, comfortable on the left, behind the striker or in a deeper creative role. His time there was interrupted near the end by a suspension imposed over a contract dispute from his youth, which kept him out for several months.

AC Milan brought him to Serie A in 2017. His four seasons at San Siro coincided with a club trying to rebuild, and his form went up and down, though by the end he was an important part of the side that returned to the Champions League places. Then came the switch across the city.

At Inter, something changed. Rather than playing as a number ten, he was moved into a deeper role as the team's playmaker in front of the defence, dictating the tempo with long passes and set pieces. It turned out to be the best football of his career, with a league title and a run to the Champions League final among the highlights of his Inter years. He also became a reliable penalty taker for the club.

With Turkey he has been the captain and central figure of the national team. The journey from Karlsruhe's second-tier stadium to directing play for Inter is a story about reinvention, and about a free-kick specialist who found his real position in his late twenties.
