Celtic supporters called Henrik Larsson the King of Kings, a title earned over seven seasons in Glasgow between 1997 and 2004. Yet his route into Scottish football started in the Netherlands, and it ended exactly where it should have: back home in Sweden at Helsingborgs IF, the club where he had grown up.

Born in September 1971 in Helsingborg to a Cape Verdean father and a Swedish mother, Larsson holds both nationalities, though he played his international football for Sweden. His professional story opens at Feyenoord, where he spent 1993 to 1997. In Rotterdam he was a quick, versatile forward, often used wide or as a second striker, and while he won silverware there, his time at the club was never quite the breakthrough his talent suggested.

That breakthrough came at Celtic. Signed in 1997, he became one of the most prolific forwards in the club's history and the centrepiece of a side that ended Rangers' run of titles and later reached a UEFA Cup final. He combined clinical finishing with a willingness to work, and he scored goals of every kind: headers, volleys, chips, tap-ins. He even came back from a badly broken leg to keep scoring at the same rate, which only deepened the devotion of the Parkhead crowd. By the time he left, he had become arguably the most beloved foreign player ever to wear the green and white hoops.

In 2004, already into his thirties, he moved to Barcelona. Many players would have treated it as a farewell tour; Larsson made it count. His two seasons in Catalonia included a serious knee injury, but he recovered to play an important role, and in the 2006 Champions League final in Paris he came off the bench and changed the game, setting up both goals in the comeback win against Arsenal.

Instead of extending his stay at a major club, he returned to Helsingborg in 2006. Then came a curious detour: a short loan to Manchester United in early 2007, during the Swedish off-season. In a few months at Old Trafford he made a strong impression on teammates and staff before going back to Sweden as planned.

He finished his career at Helsingborgs IF in 2009. For Sweden he played at several World Cups and European Championships, and his partnership with the next generation of Swedish forwards bridged two eras of the national team. The shape of this career is unusual: no great move in his early twenties, a long peak in Scotland that made him a legend, a late Champions League triumph in Spain, a cameo in Manchester, and a homecoming that framed everything.
