Iker Casillas played for just two clubs, but the second one surprises people who remember him only in white. Born in May 1981 in Madrid, he came through the Real Madrid academy and broke into the first team as a teenager in 1999. Within months he was starting in a Champions League final, and the boyish goalkeeper with extraordinary reflexes quickly became one of the faces of the club's new century.

His sixteen years at Real Madrid were built on instinct rather than size. He was not the tallest goalkeeper, and he did not rely on dominating his area through physical presence; instead he was famous for reaction saves, one-on-one stops and an ability to change direction in mid-air. Supporters nicknamed him "San Iker", Saint Iker, for the frequency with which he seemed to perform small miracles. He won La Liga several times and lifted multiple Champions League trophies with the club, and he eventually inherited the captain's armband.

His most important night, however, came with Spain. Casillas captained the national team during its golden era, lifting the European Championship in 2008, the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 and the European Championship again in 2012. In the 2010 final his one-on-one save against the Netherlands remains one of the defining images of that tournament. He became the first captain to lift all three trophies in succession, and for many fans he represented the calm authority of that generation.

The final years in Madrid were more complicated. A change in coaching staff and a public debate over his role cost him his starting place for a time, and in 2015 he left the club he had represented since childhood. Instead of an emotional farewell at the Bernabéu, the next chapter took him across the border.

He was at Porto from 2015 to 2020, which took him into the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal. In Portugal he was welcomed as a star and played with renewed enjoyment, winning the league title with the club. Away from the daily scrutiny of the Spanish capital, he looked relaxed in a way he rarely had during his final Madrid seasons, and the Dragão crowd embraced him. His career there ended abruptly in 2019, when he suffered a heart attack during a training session. He recovered, but he did not play competitively again and formally retired in 2020.

His story, then, has two very different halves: a Madrid boy who spent his entire youth and peak at the same club, collecting almost every honour available, and a Portuguese epilogue in which the pressure eased and he rediscovered the game away from home.
