Few midfielders have worn the colours of two clubs in two separate spells as calmly as İlkay Gündoğan, and fewer still have finished a long European career by choosing a shirt that ties back to their family's roots. Born in Gelsenkirchen in October 1990, with German and Turkish nationality, he grew up in the heart of the Ruhr, yet his professional career starts slightly further south, at 1. FC Nürnberg, where he played from 2009 to 2011.

Nürnberg was the proving ground. A club that has spent much of its modern history bouncing between divisions gave a young central midfielder regular minutes and the chance to be noticed, and he was noticed quickly. In 2011 he moved to Borussia Dortmund, then at the height of an energetic, pressing era under the yellow wall of the Westfalenstadion. Dortmund needed someone who could receive under pressure and keep the ball moving forward, and Gündoğan fitted that profile neatly. He stayed until 2016, a five-year chapter that included the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley, where he scored from the penalty spot against Bayern Munich in a game Dortmund ultimately lost.

The second phase began in England. Manchester City signed him in 2016, and over seven seasons he became one of the most versatile pieces of a dominant side: deep playmaker, box-to-box runner and, increasingly, a midfielder who arrived late in the area to score important goals. He was captain when City completed the treble in 2023, a season that showed how far his game had developed since Nürnberg.

Then came the unexpected sequence. In 2023 he left for Barcelona, taking on the challenge of La Liga for one season, before returning to Manchester City in 2024 for a further year. It is unusual for a senior international to leave a club at the peak of its success and then come back twelve months later, yet that is exactly the loop he completed: City, Barcelona, City again.

In 2025 he signed for Galatasaray, and his career now includes the Süper Lig and the Turkish Cup alongside the Bundesliga, the Premier League and La Liga. For a player who chose to represent Germany internationally, the move to Istanbul carried obvious personal meaning, linking the end of his career to the country of his parents.

What connects these stops is not a particular position but a way of playing. Gündoğan rarely dominates a match through pace or power; he dominates it through timing, the pass that breaks a line, the run that nobody tracks. That is why coaches in four countries trusted him, and why his career path, from Franconia to the Ruhr, to Manchester, to Catalonia and on to the Bosphorus, reads like a tour of Europe's most demanding midfields.
