Javier Mascherano was a defensive midfielder who spent most of his years at Barcelona playing in a different position altogether. That conversion, from screening the back four to standing in it, is the most distinctive thread in a career that crossed five countries and two of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Born in San Lorenzo, in Santa Fe province, in June 1984, he came through at River Plate, playing for the first team between 2003 and 2005. Unusually, he was already an Argentina international before he had settled into River's starting side, a sign of how highly he was rated as a young holding midfielder: aggressive in the tackle, relentless in covering ground, and vocal well beyond his age. The nickname that followed him, El Jefecito, the little chief, came from that leadership.

In 2005 he moved to Brazil and Corinthians, part of a group of Argentine players who arrived at the São Paulo club in the same period. A year later he and his compatriot Carlos Tevez made a surprising joint move to England with West Ham United. The London spell, from 2006 to 2007, was difficult and brief, and he soon moved north to Liverpool, where he spent three seasons as a combative partner in a strong midfield and became a fixture in Premier League football.

Barcelona signed him in 2010, and that is where the reinvention happened. With Sergio Busquets established as the team's pivot, Mascherano was increasingly used as a centre-back, where his reading of danger, his recovery speed and his willingness to throw himself into last-ditch tackles compensated for a lack of height. He stayed eight seasons, until 2018, and was part of the side that won the Champions League in 2011 and 2015, among a long list of titles in that era.

The closing stages took him far from Europe. In 2018 he joined Hebei Fortune in the Chinese Super League, and in 2020 he returned to Argentina for a short final spell at Estudiantes de La Plata before retiring.

His international career deserves a mention because it ran in parallel to all of this: two Olympic gold medals with Argentina, in 2004 and 2008, and a central role in the team that reached the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, a tournament in which his defensive work became almost legendary in his home country.
