The image many fans first associate with Joško Gvardiol is a protective face mask. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, playing with a mask after breaking his nose shortly before the tournament, the Croatian defender was one of the standout centre-backs as his country reached the semi-finals and went on to finish third. He was twenty at the time, and that tournament turned a highly rated prospect into a name known worldwide.

Born in Zagreb in January 2002, he came through at Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia's dominant club and a famous exporter of talent. His time at Dinamo took in both the HNL and the First NL, the Croatian top flight and second tier, a trace of the way Dinamo develops young players between its main squad and its reserve side. He was a first-team player from 2019 to 2021, and his combination of size, left-footed passing and composure made it obvious early on that he would not stay in Croatia for long.

His next move was to RB Leipzig, where he played from 2021 to 2023. The Bundesliga suited him: Leipzig's high-intensity style demanded defenders who could defend large spaces and carry the ball forward, and Gvardiol did both. Those two seasons in Saxony confirmed him as one of the most sought-after young defenders in Europe.

In 2023 Manchester City signed him, and his role in England has shown another side of his game. Although he is a natural centre-back, he has often been used at left-back, where he steps into midfield or pushes high up the pitch, and he has scored more than you might expect from a defender, including some memorable strikes. Nominally he is simply a defender, which is fitting for a player who has been asked to cover several defensive roles.

What makes his path neat is its logic. Each stop has been a step up in level, and each league has added something: the technical grounding and early responsibility of Croatian football, the athletic demands of the Bundesliga, and the positional sophistication of the Premier League. There have been no detours, no loans to smaller clubs and no backward moves, just a steady climb from Zagreb to Leipzig to Manchester.

He also carries a weight that goes beyond any one club. Croatia have produced a remarkable sequence of world-class players for such a small country, and Gvardiol belongs to the generation expected to take over from the side that reached the 2018 World Cup final. Still in his early twenties at the time of his move to England, he already had experience of a World Cup semi-final, two demanding Bundesliga seasons and Premier League football, a resumé that many defenders do not assemble until their thirties.
