Growing up as the son of Peter Schmeichel, one of the greatest goalkeepers ever to play in England, Kasper Schmeichel could have spent his whole career being measured against a famous surname. Instead he built a path that looks nothing like his father's, full of lower-division stops, a long and historic stay at an unfashionable club and, late on, a tour of leagues across Europe.

Born in Copenhagen in November 1986, he grew up partly in England and came through the youth system at Manchester City. He was on City's books from 2004 to 2009, but first-team chances there were limited, and his development came largely through playing time elsewhere. In 2009 he dropped down to Notts County, then in League Two, where a goalkeeper of his ability stood out immediately. A season at Leeds United followed, from 2010 to 2011, in the Championship, and both moves were about one thing: regular matches.

The decisive move came in 2011, when he joined Leicester City, then a Championship club. He stayed for eleven years, until 2022, and his time there coincided with the most remarkable period in the club's history. Leicester won promotion to the Premier League in 2014, survived a difficult first season and then, in 2016, won the Premier League title in one of the biggest surprises the sport has seen. Schmeichel was the goalkeeper throughout that campaign, and he later captained the side that won the FA Cup in 2021. Over that decade he became a symbol of the club, a vocal leader whose reflexes and shot-stopping became familiar to every Premier League forward.

Having spent so long in one place, he spent his thirties moving. In 2022 he joined Nice in Ligue 1, then went to Belgium with RSC Anderlecht for the 2023 to 2024 season, and in 2024 he signed for Celtic in Glasgow, adding the Scottish Premiership to a career that already included the Premier League, the Championship, Ligue 1 and the Belgian top flight. Few goalkeepers have played competitive football in so many different leagues.

He has a striking match total, well over nine hundred appearances, which says a great deal about his durability and the number of seasons he has been a first choice. He also has one assist to his name, a reminder that the modern goalkeeper is expected to start attacks as well as stop them.

Alongside club football he has been Denmark's first-choice goalkeeper for many years, including the run to the semi-finals of Euro 2020. His path, though, is best summed up by the shirts: the sky blue of Manchester City where he started, the blue of Leicester where he made his name, and then France, Belgium and Scotland as the closing chapters of a long journey.
