Eight hundred and seventy-one appearances into a career that began in Zagreb in 2003, Luka Modrić is still going — a midfielder born in 1985 who has outlasted almost every contemporary he started alongside, and who has spent the bulk of his professional life passing the ball in three of Europe's biggest leagues.

It started at Dinamo Zagreb. He joined the Croatian club's senior setup in the summer of 2003 and stayed through to June 2008, five years that took him from teenager to the finished article in his homeland. Dinamo is the traditional finishing school of Croatian football, and Modrić left it the way the best of their graduates do: with a move abroad, to a bigger league, at an age where the risk was still worth taking.

That move was to Tottenham Hotspur in July 2008. The Premier League was — and is — a division that has a reputation for chewing up small, technical midfielders from elsewhere, and the early questions about whether Modrić was physically built for England were the obvious ones to ask. He answered them over four seasons in north London, from 2008 to August 2012, becoming the player Spurs built their midfield around and, eventually, the player other clubs came for. The four years at White Hart Lane are the hinge of the whole story: without the English education, the Croatian would have been a very good Dinamo product; with it, he became a target for Real Madrid.

The transfer went through in August 2012, and it has never been undone. More than a decade at the Santiago Bernabéu is an extraordinary thing for any footballer, let alone a foreign midfielder arriving into a club where patience is short and the standard is absolute. Modrić's longevity in La Liga is the single most striking fact of his career: he arrived at 26 or 27 and is still an active player, having been a fixture of the Real Madrid midfield across an entire generation of Spanish football.

The numbers describe the kind of midfielder he is. 167 assists against 102 goals — a creator first, a scorer second, but not a player who avoids the box. Nearly 900 appearances across the Croatian league, the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A speak to availability as much as ability; you do not accumulate that total without being trusted week after week by a succession of demanding employers.

Three leagues, three countries, one long spell in each phase. It reads like the career of a footballer who never needed to keep moving, because each move was correct — Zagreb to London to Madrid, and then, simply, staying.
