Marco Verratti went from Serie B to Paris without ever playing a minute in Serie A, and that skipped step is the strangest and most revealing detail of his career. Born in Pescara in November 1992, he came through his hometown club on the Adriatic coast and played for Pescara from 2008 to 2012, a slight, quick-thinking midfielder in a team that played open, attacking football. When Pescara won promotion to the top flight in 2012, the obvious next chapter was for him to test himself in Italy's first division with the club that raised him. Instead, Paris Saint-Germain came for him that summer, and he left.

What followed was more than a decade in the French capital, from 2012 to 2023. Verratti arrived as a teenager-sized playmaker and became one of the defining faces of the club's transformation into a European heavyweight. He was a deep-lying midfielder who refused to play it safe: he dribbled out of pressure in his own half, kept the ball under his sole while opponents closed in, and turned defensive situations into the start of attacks. His nickname, "Gufetto", the little owl, captured both his small frame and the way he always seemed to see the whole pitch. The risk in his game also brought a steady stream of yellow cards, part of a combative streak that never went away.

His Paris years ran through Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue, the domestic competitions that PSG dominated across much of his time there. Through numerous changes of coach and an ever-rotating cast of star signings, he remained a fixture in midfield, one of the few constants across that entire period.

He was also a key piece of the Italy side that won the European Championship in 2021, the tournament delayed from 2020, adding the biggest international honour of his career and giving Italian fans who had barely seen him in their own league a reason to celebrate him.

In 2023 he closed the European part of his career and moved to Qatar, joining Al-Arabi in the Stars League. Two years later he moved to Al Duhail, another club in Doha, which means his entire Qatari chapter has been played in the same city.

Taken as a whole, his path is unusual: one hometown club, one enormous decade abroad, and a Qatari epilogue, with the Italian top flight, the league everyone expected him to dominate, never appearing in his career at all. It makes him a player known in Italy mostly through the national team, and in France as one of the pillars of the modern PSG.
