Ligue 3, Ligue 2, Ligue 1, then the Premier League: N'Golo Kanté's career reads like a staircase, and he climbed every step of it. Born in Paris in March 1991, he was overlooked by the big French academies, partly because of his small frame, and only began his professional career with Boulogne in 2012, at twenty-one, in the lower divisions of French football. It is one of the most remarkable late rises in the modern game.

From Boulogne he moved to Caen in 2013, helping the Normandy club in Ligue 2 before playing in Ligue 1 with them until 2015. In a top-flight side that fought near the bottom half, his work rate stood out immediately: he covered enormous distances, recovered the ball constantly and seemed to arrive in every duel before his opponent. Scouts in England noticed.

Leicester City signed him in 2015, and what followed was one of the most famous seasons in football history. In 2015-16 Leicester, a club that had been expected to fight relegation, won the Premier League title, and Kanté, in his only season there, was at the heart of it, a ball-winner who allowed the rest of the team to counterattack with confidence. A year earlier he had been in Ligue 1 with Caen; now he was a champion of England.

Chelsea bought him in 2016 and, remarkably, he won the Premier League again in his first season in London, back-to-back titles with two different clubs. Over seven years at Stamford Bridge, from 2016 to 2023, his role evolved: he was a pure defensive midfielder at first, later a box-to-box runner given more freedom to push forward. In 2021 he was one of the outstanding players in Chelsea's Champions League-winning campaign. Injuries slowed him in his final seasons there, but his reputation as one of the best midfielders of his generation was secure.

With France he won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, a constant presence in the midfield of the champions. His humble, smiling public image became almost as well known as his tireless running.

In 2023 he moved to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Ittihad in Jeddah, playing in the Pro League until 2026. In 2026 he moved to Fenerbahçe in Istanbul.

His path is defined by the gap between where he began and where he arrived. A player in the third tier of French football at twenty-one became, within four years, a league champion in England and a world champion with his country. Few careers show so clearly how quickly the right player can rise once someone gives him a chance.
