About Nathan Aké

Nathan Aké's career contains Bournemouth twice, back to back, and that double stint tells the story of how his career finally took shape. Born in February 1995 in the Netherlands, he moved to England as a teenager and joined Chelsea's first-team squad in 2012. On paper he stayed at Stamford Bridge until 2017, but in practice those years were spent largely elsewhere, on a series of loans that taught him the English game the hard way.

The first came at Reading in 2015, a short spell in the Championship. Later that year he went to Watford, where he spent the 2015-16 season and played regularly in the Premier League, a valuable first taste of top-flight football as a starter. Then, in 2016, Chelsea loaned him to AFC Bournemouth, the club on the south coast that would become the turning point of his career.

The loan at Bournemouth went well enough that, in 2017, Chelsea sold him there permanently. That is why the club appears twice in his career: first as a loan from 2016 to 2017, then as a full transfer from 2017 to 2020. At Bournemouth he stopped being a promising Chelsea youngster on the move and became a central figure, a left-footed defender who could play as a centre-back or at left-back and who was trusted every week. Over three full seasons he matured into one of the most reliable defenders outside the Premier League's traditional big clubs.

In 2020 Manchester City signed him, and he has stayed there since. At City he joined a squad stacked with international defenders, and his value lay in versatility: able to play in the middle of a back four, at left-back or on the left of a back three, comfortable in possession as the club's style requires, and calm enough to step in for big matches without disrupting the team. He has been part of the most successful period in the club's history, sharing in the domestic and European titles City won in those years.

His entire senior career has been played in England, a striking fact for a Dutch international. He has also been a regular member of the Netherlands squad, valued there for the same flexibility that City appreciate.

Seen as a whole, Aké's path is a lesson in patience. A young player signed by one of England's richest clubs could easily have drifted from loan to loan without ever settling. Instead he used those loans to build a career step by step: Reading for experience, Watford for minutes, Bournemouth for a home, and Manchester City as the reward for doing the hard work.
