Nicolás Otamendi has crossed the Atlantic in both directions of Portuguese football's map, arriving at Porto in his early twenties and returning to Lisbon with Benfica more than a decade later. Between those two Portuguese chapters lies a career that took an aggressive young Argentine centre-back through Spain and England and into the heart of his national team's greatest modern era.

Born in February 1988 in Buenos Aires province, he came through at Vélez Sarsfield, playing for the Liniers club from 2008 to 2010. Vélez has a long tradition of producing solid defenders, and Otamendi stood out quickly for his front-foot style, stepping out of the line to win the ball high up the pitch and imposing himself physically on forwards. His rise was fast enough that he was called up to Argentina's squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa while still very young.

Porto signed him in 2010, and the four years in the Primeira Liga, until 2014, were the education every South American defender looking for a route into Europe hopes for. Porto is a club built on buying talent from Argentina and Brazil and preparing it for the biggest leagues, and Otamendi followed that model, winning domestic honours in Portugal and maturing, over those four seasons, into a reliable starter ready for one of the bigger leagues.

In 2014 he moved to Valencia CF, and one strong season in La Liga was enough to take him to Manchester City in 2015. His five years in the Premier League, until 2020, included the period in which City built one of the most dominant sides in English football history, and he was a regular part of it, contributing to several league titles. The English game suited his aggression, though the demands of a possession-heavy system also pushed him to refine his passing.

In 2020 he joined Benfica, completing the Portuguese circle by moving to Porto's great rival. In Lisbon he has become a veteran leader and captain figure, still playing in the Primeira Liga past his mid-thirties.

His greatest achievements, though, came with Argentina. Otamendi was a key defender in the side that won the Copa América in 2021 and then the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, part of the core group that finally brought the biggest trophy back to the country.

His career map has a pleasing symmetry: Argentina to Portugal, then Spain and England, then back to Portugal, but on the other side of the country's fiercest rivalry. Across more than seven hundred matches, he has played the same way everywhere: committed, physical and always ready to step forward.
