Paulo Dybala reached Italian football from the second division of Argentina, not from River or Boca. Born in November 1993 in Laguna Larga, a small town in the province of Córdoba, he came through at Instituto, the Córdoba club, and his only Argentine season was 2011–12, in the Primera Nacional. For a teenager playing outside the top flight, that was a remarkably short runway to Europe.

Palermo signed him in 2012. Sicily was the right place to learn: a club that gave young attackers minutes, in a league that punished every loose touch. Over three seasons he grew from a slight, skilful youngster into a left-footed forward who could play off a striker, drift to the right and cut inside, or take free kicks with real precision. Palermo's supporters saw the whole transformation from close range. By 2015 the bigger clubs had noticed, and Juventus moved first.

The Turin years, 2015 to 2022, are the core of the career. He arrived at a team that dominated Serie A in that period and quickly became one of its creative references, the player who linked midfield to the centre-forward and often scored the goals that decided tight matches. Italian supporters gave him the nickname La Joya, the jewel, and his celebration with a hand over the face like a mask became a signature. Alongside the brilliance there were also stretches of muscle injuries and changing roles, especially once other big-name forwards arrived and the team was rebuilt around them.

His move to Roma in 2022 opened a new chapter in the capital. There he became a central figure again, the left foot through which much of the attack flowed, and the bond with the Roman crowd developed fast. He is still at the club, which makes Roma the second long stay of his European career after Juventus, and a rare case of a star choosing to rebuild rather than chase a bigger stage.

With Argentina he has had to compete for space with some of the most decorated attackers of his generation, which limited his minutes in a position crowded with stars. He was part of the squad that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and converted a penalty in the final shootout against France, a small but lasting moment for a player whose international career had often been a story of waiting.

The leagues on his card, Serie A and the Primera Nacional, show how direct the jump was: from the second tier in Córdoba to Italy's top flight with nothing in between. Everything since has happened in one country, across three very different clubs, a southern island, a northern industrial city, and the capital.
