About Rodri

Rodri's three clubs fit inside a decade, and each one taught him a different version of the same job. Born in Madrid in June 1996, Rodrigo Hernández Cascante made his senior breakthrough not in the capital but on the Mediterranean coast, at Villarreal, where he played from 2016 to 2018. The Yellow Submarine has a long habit of developing technical midfielders, and he left there as one of the most promising holding players in Spain.

Atlético Madrid brought him home in 2018. It was only one season, 2018–19, but it was a demanding one: Diego Simeone's side asked its midfielders for discipline, compactness and constant defensive work. Rodri adapted quickly, and that year showed that he could screen a back line under pressure as well as he could circulate the ball. In 2019 Manchester City paid his release clause and took him to England.

At City he became the axis of the team. The early adjustment took a little time, because the role at the base of Pep Guardiola's midfield is one of the most demanding in the sport, but within a couple of seasons he was the player the system leaned on. He rarely loses the ball, rarely needs more than two touches, and his positioning lets City attack with so many players because someone is always protecting the space behind them.

He also developed a habit of scoring important goals for a defensive midfielder. The best known came in the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul against Inter, a low finish from the edge of the box that gave City the trophy for the first time and completed a treble. Long-range strikes in decisive league matches added to that reputation.

With Spain, his influence grew in the same way. At Euro 2024 in Germany he was named the best player of the tournament as Spain won the title, and later that year he received the Ballon d'Or, a rare honour for a holding midfielder. Shortly before that, in September 2024, he suffered a serious knee ligament injury that kept him out for most of the following season, and his absence made it obvious how much City depended on him.

What makes him unusual is the combination. He is tall and physically strong, yet calm and precise in possession; he plays like a classic Spanish pivot but with the stamina and duels that English football demands.

His two leagues, La Liga and the Premier League, trace a tidy path: two Spanish clubs with very different philosophies, then a long stay in Manchester where he became the reference for his position. Not bad for a midfielder whose best work often goes unnoticed by the casual viewer.
