Before Rúben Dias played a single minute for Benfica's first team, he spent two seasons in Portugal's second division. He played for Benfica B from 2015 to 2017, and that detail is worth pausing on: the club's reserve side competes in the Segunda Liga, so the young centre-back from Amadora, on the edge of Lisbon, learned his trade against adult professionals rather than in youth football. It is the classic Seixal route, the academy that has produced a long line of Portuguese internationals.

He was promoted in 2017 and established himself almost immediately. Over three seasons, 2017 to 2020, he became a starter, then a leader, and he played across the full range of Portuguese competitions: the Primeira Liga, the Taça de Portugal and the Taça da Liga. Benfica won the league during that spell, and Dias was already being talked about as the next great Portuguese defender, someone with the personality to organise a back line at a young age.

In 2020 Manchester City signed him, and the impact was immediate. City had surrendered the title the previous season, and in his first campaign the team tightened up dramatically at the back and won the Premier League. Dias was named the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year for that season, an award that rarely goes to a defender, and he was also voted the league's best player. In a team famous for its attacking football, he became the voice at the back, and opponents quickly learned that crosses into his zone were rarely won.

That voice is a big part of his identity. He talks constantly, directs teammates, and celebrates a blocked shot or a cleared cross with the same intensity some forwards reserve for goals. His style is not built on pace; it is built on positioning, aerial strength, aggression in the duel and composure when City build from deep under pressure.

The high point came in 2023, when City won the Champions League in Istanbul against Inter, completing a treble. Dias was part of the central defence in that run, and the trophy confirmed him as one of the most decorated defenders of his generation.

With Portugal he has been a fixture since his Benfica days, and the national team has relied on him as a long-term partner for different centre-backs across several tournaments.

His career runs through five competitions, from the Segunda Liga to the Premier League, and they tell the story in order: reserve football in the second tier, domestic leagues and cups with Benfica, and then the move to England, where he became the defensive anchor of one of the strongest teams in Europe.
