Samuel Eto'o's career is one of the great journeys in African football, a forward who arrived in Spain as a teenager and left the game two decades later having played on four continents. Born in Cameroon in 1981, he joined Real Madrid's orbit as a youngster in the late 1990s, but first-team chances in the Spanish capital were scarce, and his early development came through loan spells at Leganés and Espanyol — the unglamorous apprenticeship of a striker waiting for a stage of his own. He found one at Mallorca, where from 2000 to 2004 he turned into a genuine goalscorer in La Liga and forced the biggest clubs to take notice.

They did. In 2004 he joined Barcelona, and the five seasons that followed made him one of the most feared forwards in the world, the spearhead of a dominant Catalan side during a golden period for the club. From there he moved to Inter Milan in 2009 and became part of a celebrated era in Italian football, a striker willing to do the unglamorous work as readily as he scored, which endeared him to a team built to win everything. Across Spain and Italy, Eto'o stood at the very top of the European game, and his standing among African footballers of his generation was without rival — a repeat winner of the continent's highest individual honours and, for years, the face of Cameroonian football.

Rather than fading quietly at the elite level, he became a pioneer of football's new frontiers, moving to Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia in 2011 at a moment when the Russian league was making headlines by attracting global stars. He later returned to the Premier League with Chelsea and then Everton, added a spell at Sampdoria in Italy, and spent his final seasons in Turkey with Antalyaspor and Konyaspor before a closing chapter at Qatar SC.

That late tour — Russia, England, Italy, Turkey, Qatar — is not a footnote but part of the point: Eto'o was as restless and ambitious at the end as at the beginning, willing to carry his goals wherever the game was expanding. His trajectory runs from the reserves of a Spanish giant to the summit of the sport and out to its furthest reaches, taking in the Spanish, Italian, Russian, English, Turkish and Qatari leagues along the way.
