About Son Heung-min

Son Heung-min's career is the story of a Korean forward who did not arrive in Europe as a finished product but was built there, season by season, until he became one of the most recognisable attackers of his generation. Born in 1992, he left South Korea as a teenager and joined Hamburger SV in Germany, and that early move set the tone for everything that followed: rather than waiting for the game to come to him, he went to where the toughest football was played and learned it in the Bundesliga. Between 2010 and 2013 he grew up inside German football, and the polish showed when he moved to Bayer Leverkusen in 2013, a club used to competing near the top of the table and in European nights, where his pace and two-footedness turned him from a promising winger into a genuine goal threat.

The defining chapter began in 2015, when he crossed to England and signed for Tottenham Hotspur. Over a decade in North London he became the emotional centre of the team, a forward equally comfortable drifting in from the left or leading the line, and one of the few players in the Premier League who could finish with either foot without a flicker of preference. His decade at Tottenham made him a fixture of the English top flight and a name known far beyond it, in large part because he carried the hopes of Korean football with him every week; back home, matches were watched at dawn simply to see whether he would score. In 2025 he closed that European era and moved to Los Angeles FC, taking his game to Major League Soccer in the United States and opening a new market for a player whose appeal had always been continental.

Alongside the club story runs the national one. As captain and talisman of South Korea, Son turned himself into the face of Asian football on the biggest stages, the player opponents planned for and supporters travelled to watch. What makes his trajectory unusual is its straight line of ascent: Hamburg to Leverkusen to Tottenham, each step a level up rather than sideways, each league — German, English, and now American — a deliberate test. He is not a player defined by a single dazzling season but by relentless consistency across borders, a left-footed and right-footed forward who kept scoring wherever he was asked to, from the Bundesliga to the Premier League to MLS.
