Toni Kroos built one of the great midfield careers of his time on a skill that rarely makes highlight reels: the simple pass, played correctly, over and over again. Born in January 1990 in East Germany, months before reunification, the midfielder joined Bayern Munich's senior squad in July 2007, still only seventeen. The first Bayern spell lasted until January 2009, and it was too early for a teenager to break into a squad full of internationals, so in February 2009 he moved to Bayer Leverkusen on loan.

Leverkusen proved decisive. From early 2009 to June 2010 he played regularly in the Bundesliga, learning to dictate tempo from deep and to strike the ball cleanly from distance, and he returned to Munich as a far more complete player. The second Bayern spell ran from July 2010 to July 2014. Those four seasons established him as a starter for one of Europe's strongest clubs and as a fixture in the German national team, and they ended with the biggest prize in the sport: in 2014 he won the FIFA World Cup with Germany.

Days after that World Cup final, in July 2014, he signed for Real Madrid. Spain became the setting for the decade that defines him, a full ten years until June 2024. In Madrid he became the metronome of the midfield, rarely losing the ball and spreading play from side to side, and the hints recorded for him note multiple Champions League titles with the club. One fun fact adds a rarer distinction: he is among the small group of players who lifted the Champions League with two different clubs, Bayern and Real Madrid.

His precision became part of his identity. The records note that he regularly completed more than ninety per cent of his passes in a match, and the nickname The Waiter, in Portuguese Garçom, came from the way he served the ball to teammates as if on a tray. German fans had their own, more teasing label, Querpass Toni, a joke about his fondness for the sideways pass that underlines how central control was to his game.

He retired from professional football in 2024, walking away from Real Madrid at the end of the season rather than drifting into a final stop elsewhere, which makes his grid unusually tidy: Bayern, Leverkusen, Bayern again, then Madrid. Only two countries appear on it, Germany and Spain. His recorded totals stand at 859 appearances, 90 goals and 186 assists. Another detail completes the portrait of a creature of habit: throughout his career he wore the classic Adidas Adipure 11Pro boots, having them custom-made long after the model had been discontinued.
