Two spells at Everton bookend the middle of Wayne Mark Rooney's career, and the symmetry is the tell: this was a Merseyside boy who left home at 18, spent thirteen years at Manchester United, and then went back to where he began. Born in 1985, he broke into Everton's first team in August 2002 as a teenager and stayed until August 2004 — barely two years of senior football on the blue side of Liverpool, but enough to make the next move one of the defining transfers of English football's mid-2000s.

At Manchester United from September 2004 to July 2017, Rooney did not simply survive a long stay at a giant club; he outlasted eras. Thirteen seasons at Old Trafford meant he arrived as a forward defined by explosiveness and finished as something closer to a facilitator. The raw career numbers point that way: 366 goals and 184 assists across 884 appearances. United in the United States, staying until October 2019 — a move typical of the generation of English forwards who took their name and their football intelligence to MLS rather than winding down quietly at home. For an English footballer of his standing, the American chapter was both a genuine playing spell and a change of scenery after sixteen unbroken years in the English top flight.

The last stop was the most revealing. In January 2020 he signed for Derby County, dropping out of the Premier League environment he had inhabited since 2002 and into the English second tier, where he played until January 2021 before retiring. A forward who had spent his peak years at one of the biggest clubs in the world ended his playing days in a Championship midfield role, the final step in a long conversion from teenage phenomenon to veteran organiser.

Nineteen seasons, 884 appearances, and a career that moved from Goodison Park to Old Trafford, back to Goodison, on to Washington and finally to Derby.
