Seventeen seasons at one address. That is the first thing to understand about Xavi Hernández: from August 1998 until June 2015, the Spanish midfielder's professional life had a single postcode, FC Barcelona, and only after that — at 35, with nothing left to prove in Spain — did he take a passport stamp to Qatar.

Born in 1980, he arrived in Barcelona's first team as the century was turning, at the tail end of a decade of upheaval, and he stayed long enough to see the club pass through several different identities. That is the rarest kind of career now: not a loan spell, not a sideways move to a mid-table side to get minutes, not a two-year contract somewhere in another league to pad out the résumé. One club, seventeen years, the whole arc of a footballer's life played out in front of the same crowd.

The numbers describe the player as clearly as any scouting report. 1,017 appearances is the total of somebody who was almost never absent and almost never rotated out — a midfielder whose presence was treated as structural rather than optional. And the split between the other two columns tells you exactly what kind of midfielder he was: 153 goals, 238 assists. More passes that ended in someone else's goal than goals of his own, by a wide margin. That is not the profile of a box-crashing number eight or a specialist finisher arriving late. It is the profile of a player who made the game happen a beat before the decisive moment, who found the pass that made the next pass easy, and who was measured by what the team produced rather than by what he claimed.

Then, in July 2015, the move nobody who had watched him for a decade and a half quite got used to: Al Sadd SC, in Qatar. He was 35, an age at which most footballers of his type — the ones who live on the ball rather than off their legs — either accept a diminished role or stop. Instead he took on four more seasons in the Qatari league, from that first summer through to May 2019, finishing as an experienced foreign midfielder in a competition that had built itself partly around exactly that kind of signing: a player whose reading of space and tempo transferred anywhere, precisely because it had never depended on pace.

He retired after that 2018-19 campaign. Two clubs, two countries, twenty-one seasons of senior football, and the shape of it all is unmistakable — a Spanish midfielder who defined a long era at FC Barcelona, and who chose Doha rather than a quiet fade as the place to spend his last four years.
