About Zlatan Ibrahimović

Zlatan Ibrahimović changed clubs so often, and won so much along the way, that his career reads like a tour of European football's great capitals. Born in October 1981 in Malmö, the Swedish forward began his professional career at his hometown club, Malmö FF, where his record starts in 1999. A football court in the Malmö neighbourhood where he grew up now carries his name, a sign of how closely the city still claims him.

In August 2001 he left Sweden for Ajax, and the Eredivisie gave him three years to refine a style that mixed size with an almost gymnastic touch; his honorary black belt in taekwondo is often cited as the root of that agility. From Amsterdam he moved to Italy, joining Juventus in September 2004, and then, in August 2006, crossed to Inter Milan, where he spent three seasons. Italy became the country he returned to most, and those years built the reputation of a forward who won wherever he went.

In July 2009 he joined Barcelona, a single season that ended in August 2010, when he went back to Milan, this time to AC Milan, completing a rare set of Juventus, Inter and Milan on the same CV. In July 2012 he moved to Paris Saint-Germain, and the four years in the French capital, until June 2016, were the longest stop of his career. The hints recorded for him point out something few players can claim: league titles in four different countries, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and France.

The later chapters show a forward refusing to slow down. He joined Manchester United in July 2016, adding the Premier League to his collection, then in March 2018 moved to LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer. At the start of 2020 he returned to AC Milan for a final spell, staying until June 2023, when he retired with Milan as his last club. Seven countries appear on his grid in total: Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, England and the United States.

His recorded totals are 987 appearances, 573 goals and 216 assists, and he is the all-time leading scorer for the Swedish national team. Statistics, though, capture only part of him. He became famous for spectacular acrobatic goals and for a charismatic, outsized personality that made every press conference an event. Fans called him Ibra, Ibracadabra or The Lion, and he could address many of them in their own language: he is fluent in Swedish, Bosnian, English, Spanish and Italian. Few forwards have played for so many giants, and fewer still left a mark at each of them.
