Three clubs, three cities, and not a single wasted move: Stefan de Vrij has spent his entire professional life at Feyenoord, Lazio and Inter, and each transfer took him one rung higher without ever forcing him to reinvent the way he defends. Born in February 1992 in the Netherlands, he is a centre-back of the calm, positional school, the kind of defender who wins duels by arriving early rather than by throwing himself into them, and who is as comfortable stepping into midfield with the ball as he is clearing it.

Rotterdam came first. De Vrij broke into the Feyenoord first team in 2009, still a teenager, and stayed for five seasons in the Eredivisie. Feyenoord is a club whose supporters value graft and loyalty, and a young defender who reads the game well finds an audience there quickly. He was trusted early, which says plenty about his composure at that age. By the time he left in 2014 he had already worn the orange shirt at a World Cup: he was part of the Netherlands side that reached the semi-finals in Brazil that summer and finished third, and he scored against Spain in the famous opening win in Salvador. That tournament was his shop window.

Rome was the next stop. Lazio signed him in 2014, and Serie A turned a promising Dutch stopper into a tactically complete one. Italian football asks centre-backs to understand space, line height and the timing of a step forward, and de Vrij absorbed it all over four seasons at the Stadio Olimpico. He was not a flashy figure, but he became the reference point of the Lazio back line, the man around whom the other defenders organised themselves.

In 2018 he moved north to Milan and joined Inter, arriving on a free transfer once his Lazio contract ran out. It was a quiet signing that turned into one of the most durable in the club's recent history. In a back three he settled on the central spot, reading danger for the two defenders beside him and starting moves from deep. Inter's return to the top of Italian football in the following years, including league titles, had him as a regular presence, and he has remained at the club well beyond the point where many defenders begin to drift.

What stands out across his career is the economy of it. There is no loan spell, no misjudged gamble abroad, no return to the Netherlands to rebuild a reputation. Eredivisie to Serie A, Feyenoord to Lazio to Inter, a straight route through two leagues that suited a defender who thinks before he moves. More than six hundred matches in, he is still in Milan, still making the difficult look routine.
