2010 was the year Wesley Sneijder nearly won everything. With Inter he took the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League in a single season, and a few weeks later he was in the World Cup final with the Netherlands, losing to Spain in extra time in Johannesburg. Few attacking midfielders have ever packed so much into twelve months, and that season remains the reference point of a career that otherwise wandered across six countries.

Born in Utrecht in June 1984, Sneijder came through the famous Ajax academy and made his first-team debut as a teenager. From 2002 to 2007 he grew into the playmaker of the Amsterdam side: short, compact, with a vicious shot from distance and a dead-ball technique that made every free kick near the box a threat. He could pass and shoot equally well with either foot, which made him hard to read. Defenders could not show him onto his weaker side, because in practice he did not seem to have one.

In 2007 Real Madrid signed him, part of a wave of Dutch players arriving at the Bernabéu. His first season ended with the La Liga title, but by 2009 the club was reshaping its squad around new arrivals, and Sneijder became surplus. That apparent setback turned into the luckiest move of his life. Inter took him to Milan in 2009, and he immediately became the creative hub of a team built to defend deep and break fast. He was the player who found the forwards with one pass, and in that treble-winning campaign he was at his absolute peak.

He stayed at Inter until early 2013 before moving to Istanbul and joining Galatasaray. In Turkey he found a club and a crowd that adored him, and his four-plus seasons there brought domestic success, including cup competitions; the DB lists both the Süper Lig and the Türkiye Kupası among his competitions. In 2017 he moved to the south of France with Nice in Ligue 1, a short spell that did not quite work out, and his playing days ended in Qatar with Al-Gharafa between 2018 and 2019.

Read as a map, the career is unusual: Eredivisie, La Liga, Serie A, Süper Lig, Ligue 1 and the Qatar Stars League, each with a distinct footballing culture. Read as a story, it has one clear summit. Sneijder was never a classic number ten in the languid sense; he was a midfielder who played forward and decided games quickly, with a shot or a single ball between the lines. For one remarkable year, that was enough to put him at the centre of world football.
